TGI Freaking F! It’s about to get real! Many years back, the author was speaking at a seminar and an older executive stood up and said, “Well, that’s great for happy people, Shawn, but what about the rest of us? We want to get an edge up too.” We can all reap the benefits of happiness if we work hard enough at it. “Happiness is not just a mood, it is a work ethic.” While all of us have a happiness baseline that we fluctuate around on a daily basis, with concerted effort, we can raise that baseline permanently. Even when we are having our ups and downs, we are doing it at a higher level.

Larger shifts in thinking and behavior are vital to our happiness, but so are the small, momentary blips of positivity, which pepper our lives each and every day.

As we have seen, just a short video clip, a conversation with a friend, or even a small gift of candy can produce a significant and immediate boost in cognitive power and job performance.

Focusing on how we feel day to day is very important to overall happiness. The book talks about several ways to create happiness daily. Some of these things might sound familiar.

Meditation– take 5 minutes a day to watch your breath go in and out. Studies show that this increases the left prefrontal cortex, which increases happiness. “Meditation is one of the most important happiness interventions.”

Find Something to Look Forward to– One study shows that people who simply thought about watching their favorite show increased their endorphins by 27 percent. Now that I think about it, this concept really does work. When you are looking forward to something, the day speeds up and you become more excited. “Often the most enjoyable time of an activity is the anticipation.”

Commit Common Acts of Kindness– There was a study done on 2,000 people that showed that acts of kindness decrease stress and strongly contribute to enhanced mental health. Many researchers have done studies where they have people engage in 5 acts of kindness in a day. Guess what the report says? You got it. These people are happier too. Let’s give it a try.

I challenge each one of you to find 5 people to take care of today. Let’s watch what happens.

Infuse Positivity into Your Surroundings– Your environment can have an incredible impact on your mindset and well-being. “While we may not always have complete control over our surroundings, we can make specific efforts to infuse them with positivity.”

I will go over the rest of the ideas the book has on Monday’s blog. In the meantime, make today great! Take control of your happiness! Think positive and speak positive. Life is good!

Yours truly,

Meditation fuuur days, Cram
