Canfield begins today by talking about his 3rd principle, “decide what you want.” Once you have decided why you are here, you have to decide what you want to be and want to have. You also need to decide what you want to accomplish and experience, in the journey of life. In other words, what does success look like to you? Honestly, one of the main reasons people do not get what they want, is because they have not decided what they want. They haven’t even taken the time to put on paper, put out into the universe, or told anyone what they really want.
When I first got into goals and affirmations about 5 or 6 years ago, I will have to admit that I was very private with what I wanted. I kept it between me and the good man upstairs. However, I found out quickly, there is power in allowing others to know what you desire in life. There is power in writing down your goals every day. There is power in saying it to yourself in the mirror over and over. Now, I shout my goals and affirmations from the rooftops. Ask my wife, just last night I was preaching to her very passionately about who I am, what I stand for, and what I want to accomplish. Bless her soul, because she has heard it a million times, but still acts interested every time. Shout your goals and affirmations from the rooftops baby!
You have to define your desires in clear and compelling detail. Right now, there are many of us who do things, not because we want to do them, but because they please other people. We get a real job, instead of pursuing our passions of building financial freedom from selling satellite. On behalf of being sensible, we become numb to our own desires. Once again, if you were to stop 20 people in the road and ask them where they are going or what they want out of life, five percent would actually know. These five percent would actually have written down his or her goals, and broadcasted those goals to other people.
So how do you reclaim yourself, in your true goals and desires? How do you get what you want with no shame, fear, or inhibition? How do you become part of the five percent? You begin on the smallest level, by honoring your personal preferences no matter how large or small. Do not think of them as petty. They may be inconsequential to someone else, but not to you.
If you really want to start getting what you want out of life, you have to stop saying I don’t know, I don’t care, and it doesn’t matter to me. When you are faced with a choice, no matter how small it might be, act as if you have a preference, now matter what. Ask yourself:
If I did know, what would it be? If I did care, which would I prefer? If it did matter, what would I rather do?
Not being clear about what you want, and making other people’s requests more important, is simply a habit. We have to stop settling because your preferences are not petty.
We have to know and act on our desires in a much more powerful way. Make a want list. Canfield says, to start by making a list of 10 things you want to have, you want to do, and you want to be in the next five years. Once you have done this, freaking go after them! The world is your playground. You get to freaking decide where you want to go, what you want to be, how long it is going to take for you to get there, and how much happiness you want to have. Does it get any better than that? Go after life! It feels freaking amazing!
