Goals will always lead you to success if you put forth the effort to accomplish them. If you are working towards a goal, you are always moving forward. As you work towards your goals keep the following factors in the forefront of your mind:
- Consideration – All the reasons why you should not attempt the goal.
- Fears – Feelings you experience as you work towards your goal.
- Road Blocks – External circumstances beyond your thoughts and feelings.
By focusing on these three factors, your goals will become more rational and more easily accomplished.
Let’s look at this hypothetical goal to highlight each of these three factors. You are a current Sales Rep for DishOne with a goal to sell 400 accounts this summer. So how are you going to accomplish this goal? This is where you start to make a list of considerations, you would need to consider many facets both positive and negative. ‘If I want to sell 400 accounts this summer I will need to work hard every day. I will need to wake up early, do my power hour every day…and so on.’ You may become discouraged in this step, but keep moving forward, consider every aspect of your goal. Bringing both positive and negative reasons why you should or should not attempt this goal is important. As you bring each reason to the surface you will start to see the bigger picture of how to accomplish your goal.
After you have considered all the reasons you should and should not attempt your goal(s) you will begin to feel fear. Fear is just a feeling that comes into your life to psych you out. Do not let it stop you from accomplishing your goal! Fear is a powerful tool you can use to achieve your goals; if you let it drag you down you will lose 100% of the time. Understand your fears, understand when you experience fear you are experiencing it simply because you are close to achieving greatness.
Anyone who has tasted success has pushed through fear.
Fear is a driving force for you to accomplish great things. It is perfectly okay if you are afraid, but do not let that fear stop you from pursuing your goal. Use this fear to propel you further towards your goal.
Finally, you will face road blocks. These are purely external circumstances, well beyond your thoughts and feelings. As your work towards your goal of 400 accounts you may have a set of days where you will not get one sale. What you do in that situation is up to you, but if you desire to have success you will not let this get you down. You will push harder, you will push past this road block and before you know it, you will be making 4 sales a day. Maybe even 7 to 10 sales a day!
When you set a goal you will have many considerations, fears, and road blocks. Do not see these things as stop signs, picture them as part of your success. If you can get through each of these three facet you will see you can accomplish any goal you make. Your goals should stretch you, you should experience each of these three things every time you are working towards something that is worth it. Stop being afraid of your goals, start shouting your goals from the rooftops. Focus on all the reasons why you can accomplish your goals, and push away any negative feelings you have! Set goals, accomplish each goal, and become successful!
