Happy freaking Tuesday. Today we are moving onto the next principle, which is called “clean up your messes and your incompletes.” This principle uses what we call the cycle of completion; decide, plan, start, continue, finish, complete. Each of these steps are required to succeed at anything. Yet how many of us never complete specific task? We get all the way through the finishing state, but leave one thing undone. Are there areas in your life where you have left uncompleted projects? Or failed to get closure with people?

When you don’t complete the past, you can’t be fully prepared to embrace the present.

Jack says that failing to complete robs you of valuable attention units. When you start a project, commit to something, or make a commitment, it goes into your memory bank as what he calls an attention unit. You can only pay attention to so many things at one time. By not completing your current tasks, it takes up space in your attention unit, making it difficult to focus on new opportunities that may have come your way.

So why don’t people complete? Not completing tasks have a lot to do with not being clear, or come from psychological and emotional blocks. For instance, you might have a ton of projects on your desk that you wanted to say no to in the first place, but you ended up saying yes because you did not want to be the bad guy. Another instance is that you may not have strong enough systems or enough expertise to accomplish the task.

Other incompletions pile up because of our bad work habits. You need to be continuously asking yourself, “what does it take to get this task completed?” After you have asked yourself this question, then you go to work to get it done. The truth is that 20 things fully completed are way more powerful than 50 things half completed. One finished book that is sent out to the world to influence them is better than 10 books that you are currently writing. Here are the 4 D’s of completion:

  • Do it!
  • Delegate it!
  • Delay it!
  • Dump it!

We will go into the 4 D’s in more detail tomorrow, however, I just wanted to end by saying this final thought. It is human nature to start projects, goals, and make commitments that we never finish.

We live in a society that does this way too much. Be a man or a woman who people know that when they say they are going to get something done, you see it through all the way until it is finished. If you are taking on too much to make that possible, don’t make the commitment in the first place. There are not too many things more important than being known as a person who follows through. ALWAYS follow through with commitments!
